48:1  Verily, WE have opened up a clear breakthrough for you.

48:2  That Allah may forgive you for what had preceded any imperfection of yours and what followed, and that HE may complete HIS blessing upon you and show you a straight path.

48:3  And that Allah may help you with a mighty support.

48:4  HE is WHO instilled the tranquility into the hearts of the believers, that HE may add faith alongside their faith: To Allah belong the forces of the heavens and the earth and Allah is ever knowing, all-wise.

48:5  [And HE opened the way] that HE may admit the believing men and believing women to gardens with streams flowing subservient to them, to reside therein, and that HE may efface their misdeeds from them. That in the sight of Allah, is a transcendent triumph.

48:6  And [that] HE may punish the hypocrites, men and women, and the men who worship false gods and the women who worship false gods, the ones who make suppositions about Allah— the foulest of suppositions. Upon them is the cycle of foulness. Allah was indignant with them, and HE has denounced them, and HE has proportioned Jahannam for them— and wretched a destination it is

48:7  To Allah belong the forces of the heavens and the earth. Allah is almighty, ever wise.

48:8  Surely, WE have sent you as a witness, and a conveyor of divine tidings, and a warner,

48:9  that you all may believe in Allah and HIS messenger. And that you may assist him and revere HIM, and contemplate HIS limitless glory, [each] day’s start and the day’s end.

48:10  Those who pledge allegiance to you, they in reality pledge allegiance to Allah. The Hand of Allah is over their hands. Hence whoever has reneged— he reneges only against his own soul. And whoever has fulfilled what he pledged to Allah— HE will give him a transcendent reward.

48:11  The ones to be left behind, from amongst the desert Arabs, will say to you, “Our holdings and our families preoccupied us, so ask forgiveness for us.” They speak with their tongues, not what is in their hearts. Say, “If HE has intended harm for you or intended a benefit for you— who can have any bit of say for you against Allah. Nay! Allah is ever aware about what you do.”

48:12  In fact, you had assumed that the Messenger and the believers would never be returning to their families and that was made fair seeming to your hearts. You had thought the most insidious of thoughts, and you were a [spiritually] fallow people.

48:13  And whoever has not believed in Allah and HIS prophet— then surely, WE have prepared a blaze for the disbelievers.

48:14  To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. HE forgives whosoever HE wills, and HE chastises whosoever HE wills. And ever is Allah forgiving, all-merciful.

48:15  The ones to be left behind are soon to say, when you set out toward a booty to seize it, “Allow us to follow you.” They desire to change the word of Allah. Say, “You are not to follow us. Thus, has Allah said beforehand.” To which they will say, “Nay, you begrudge us.” Nay! They understand not but scant.

48:16  Say to ones left behind from among desert Arabs, “You will soon be called upon to face a people of extreme violence. You will fight them, or they will submit. So [with the possibility of being killed and a possibility of peaceful outcome without booty to claim], if you obey, HE will give you a worthy reward, and if you turn away as you turned away before, HE will chastise you with an agonizing chastisement.”

48:17  Not anywise to be a strain on the blind, or a strain on the lame, or a strain on the sick. Whosoever obeys Allah and HIS messenger, HE will admit such in gardens with subservient rivers in flow. And whosoever turns away, HE will chastise him with an agonizing chastisement.

48:18  Allah did indeed give assent to the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree— HE knew what was in their hearts. So, HE sent down tranquility upon them and awarded them an imminent breakthrough,

48:19  and plentiful spoils which they will take. Allah is almighty, ever wise.

48:20  Allah has promised many spoils for you to take. So, HE has advanced this [opening] for you, and HE has stopped the hands of men against you, so that it be a sign for the believers, and that HE guides you to a straight path.

48:21  And others [to come] over which you had lacked the capacity— Allah has already circumscribed them [for you]. Allah is ever in almighty control over all things, and their measure.

48:22  If the ones who have disbelieved were to fight you, they would turn their backs in flight and then not find any ally or helper.

48:23  — A regulation of Allah, which has taken its course since time past, and you will not find a change in the regulation of Allah.

48:24  HE it is WHO stopped their hands against you and your hands against them in the belly of Makkah, after HE made you victorious over them. Allah is ever seeing of what you do.

48:25  They were the ones who fought the Truth and barred you from the Inviolable House of Worship and [barred] your held-in-place offering from reaching its place of sacrifice. [Allah would not have stopped hands] if it were not for believing men and believing women— not did you know them— who you would have been unknowingly trampled, and then a stain, ensuing from them, would have attached to you. [Allah stopped hands] so that Allah may admit into HIS mercy whom HE wills. Had they fully separated out [i.e., no more forgiveness-seekers were to come forth], WE would have surely punished the ones amongst them who had fought the Truth, with an agonizing punishment.

48:26  When the ones who had disbelieved had unleashed the fanatic rage in their hearts— the fanatic rage of the culture of ignorance, Allah sent down HIS tranquility upon HIS messenger and the believers and compulsorily bound them to the word of pious restraint. And they were truer by it and worthy of it. Allah is fully knowing of all things.

48:27  Allah has validated the vision of HIS messenger with reality. You will most certainly enter the Inviolable House of Worship, if Allah wills—in security, with your heads shaved and shorn, no fear will you have. What you do not know, HE [knows] and did know. Thus [while it is not in your knowledge], HE has assigned besides that an imminent breakthrough.

48:28  HE is Who sent HIS messenger with the Guidance and a religion of the Truth, that HE may make it prevail over the [man-made] religion— every aspect of it. And Allah suffices as a witness.

48:29  Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger. Those who are with him are firm against the disbelievers and merciful amongst themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking grace from Allah and HIS assent— their mark integral to their faces, from the imprint of prostrations. That is their model in the Torah. And their model in the Injīl is like a seed that bore its shoot, then strengthened it, so it grew sturdy and then rose on its trunk, delighting the sowers so that HE may incense the disbelievers through them. Allah has promised the ones among them who have believed and have done the right deeds, forgiveness, and a transcendent reward.
