Surah “Repentance”

as rendered by The Wise Quran Project — 129 verses

9:1
An exemption from God and His messenger to those who you covenanted with among the idolaters.
9:2
So journey in the earth four months, and know that you will not escape God, and that God disgraces the disbelievers.
9:3
And an announcement from God and His messenger to mankind on the day of the greater pilgrimage that God is clear of the idolaters, and His messenger. So if you repent, then it is better for you; and if you turn away, then know that you will not escape God. And give those who disbelieved glad tidings of a painful punishment.
9:4
Except those who you covenanted with among the idolaters, then they did not diminish you in anything, and they did not assist anyone against you. So complete to them their covenant until their term. Indeed, God loves those who fear.
9:5
Then when the sacred months end, then kill the idolaters wherever you find them, and seize them, and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every observatory. So if they repent, and they are steadfast in the prayer, and they give the alms, then leave their way; Indeed, God is forgiving, compassionate.
9:6
And if anyone among the idolaters seek your protection, then protect him until he hears the words of God, then convey him to his place of safety. That is because they are people who do not know.
9:7
How can there be a covenant for the idolaters with God and with His messenger? Except those who you covenanted with near the sacred mosque. So what they go straight for you, then go straight for them; indeed, God loves those who fear.
9:8
How, while if they prevail against you they do not regard in you kinship nor treaty? They please you with their mouths, and their hearts refuse, and most of them are disobedient.
9:9
They sold the signs of God for a little price, then they hindered from His way; indeed they, evil is what they used to do.
They do not regard in a believer kinship nor treaty; and those, they are the transgressors.
So if they repent and they are steadfast in the prayer and they give the alms, then your brothers in the religion. And We explain the signs in detail for people who know.
And if they break their oaths after their covenant and defame your religion, then fight the models of disbelief; indeed they, there are no oaths for them, perhaps they may desist.
Will you not fight people who broke their oaths, and planned to expel the messenger? And they began with you the first time. Do you fear them? So God is more worthy that you should fear Him, if you are believers.
Fight them, God will punish them by your hands, and He will disgrace them, and He will help you against them, and He will heal the breasts of believing people,
And He will remove the rage of their hearts; and God relents on whom He wills; and God is knowing, wise.
Or you thought that you would be left, while God knows not those who strove among you and did not take intimate friends besides God nor His messenger nor the believers? And God is aware of what you do.
It is not for the idolaters to fill the mosques of God with life bearing witness against themselves of disbelief; those, their works are void, and in the fire they will dwell forever.
Only one who has believed in God and the Last Day, and is steadfast in the prayer, and gave the alms, and did not fear except God shall fill the mosques of God with life. So it may be those, that they are among the guided.
Have you made the watering of the pilgrim and the filling of the sacred mosque with life like one who believed in God and the Last Day, and strove in the way of God? They are not equal with God. And God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Those who believed and emigrated and strove in the way of God with their wealth and their souls are greater in degrees with God, and those, they are the successful.
Their Lord gives them glad tidings of mercy from Him and pleasure and gardens for them in which is lasting pleasure,
To dwell forever in it, forever. Indeed, God, with Him is a great reward.
O those who believed! Do not take your fathers and your brothers as patrons if they prefer disbelief to faith. And whoever makes them patrons among you, then those, they are the wrongdoers.
Say, 'If your fathers and your sons and your brothers and your spouses and your kinsfolk and wealth which you have earned and commerce which you fear its stagnation and dwellings which you are pleased with are dearer to you than God and His messenger and striving in His way, then wait until God brings His command; and God does not guide the disobedient people.'
Surely, certainly, God has helped you in many regions and on the day of Hunayn, when your multitude pleased you, then it did not avail you anything, and the earth was straitened for you, inasmuch as it is vast; then you turned back, retreating.
Then God sent down His tranquillity to His messenger and to the believers; and He sent down armies which you did not see, and He punished those who disbelieved; and that is the recompense of the disbelievers.
Then God relents after that on whom He wills; and God is forgiving, compassionate.
O those who believed! The idolaters only are uncleanness, so do not let them draw near the sacred mosque after this their year. And if you fear poverty, then soon God will enrich you from His grace, if He wills; indeed, God is knowing, wise.
Fight those who do not believe in God nor the Last Day, and do not forbid what God has forbidden, and His messenger, and do not subject themselves to the religion of truth among those who have been given the book, until they give the tribute out of hand while they are as little ones.
And the Jews said, 'Ezra is the son of God,' and the Christians said, 'The Messiah is the son of God.' That is their speech with their mouths, they imitate the speech of those who disbelieved before. God fight them. How are they turned away?
They have taken their scribes and their monks as lords besides God, and the Messiah, the son of Mary. And they were commanded not except to serve one god, there is no god but He; Glory be to Him above what they associate.
They desire to extinguish the light of God with their mouths, and God refuses except to perfect His light, even though the disbelievers are averse.
He is the one who sent His messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over the religion, all of it, even though the idolaters are averse.
O those who believed! Indeed, many of the scribes and the monks surely consume the wealth of mankind with falsehood, and they hinder from the way of God. And those who hoard the gold and the silver and do not spend them in the way of God, so give them glad tidings of painful punishment.
On the day He will heat them in the fire of hell, then their foreheads and their sides and their backs will be branded with them, 'This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard.'
Indeed, the number of months with God is twelve months in the book of God on the day He created the heavens and the earth, among them, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong your souls in them. And fight the idolaters wholly, as they fight you wholly, and know that God is with those who fear.
The postponing is only an increase in disbelief, those who disbelieved are led astray by it. They make it lawful a year, and they forbid it a year, that they may agree in the number of what God has forbidden, then they make lawful what God has forbidden. The evil of their works has been beautified for them, and God does not guide the disbelieving people.
O those who believed! What ails you when it is said to you, 'Go forth into battle in the way of God,' You become heavy to the earth? Are you pleased with the worldly life than the hereafter? So the enjoyment of the worldly life in the hereafter is not except a little.
If you do not go forth into battle, He will punish you, a painful punishment, and He will substitute with people other than you, and you will not harm Him anything, and God is powerful over everything.
If you do not help him, then certainly, God helped him, when those who disbelieved drove him out, the second of two, when they both were in the cave; when he said to his companion, 'Do not grieve, indeed, God is with us.' Then God sent down His tranquillity to him, and He strengthened him with armies which you did not see, and He made the word of those who disbelieved the lower, while the word of God, it is the higher; and God is mighty, wise.
Go forth into battle light and heavy and strive with your wealth and your souls in the way of God. That is better for you, if you know.
If it had been near goods and a moderate journey, surely they would have followed you; but the distance was far away to them; and soon they will swear by God, 'If we were able, surely, we would have come forth with you.' They destroy their souls, and God knows indeed, they are surely liars.
God has pardoned you. Why did you give permission to them until it became clear to you those who were truthful, and you know the liars?
Those who believe in God and the Last Day would not ask for your permission to strive with their wealth and their souls; and God knows those who fear.
Only those who do not believe in God and the Last Day ask for your permission, and their hearts have doubted, so they, in their doubt, they hesitate.
And if they had desired the coming forth, surely they would have made preparations for it; but God was averse to their being sent out, so He held them back, and it was said, 'Sit with those who sit.'
If they had come forth among you, they would not have increased you except in confusion. And surely, they would have been active in your midst seeking the trial for you, and among you are listeners to them; and God knows the wrongdoers.
Surely, certainly they sought the trial before and they turned over the affairs for you until the truth came, and the command of God became apparent, while they were averse.
And among them is one who says, 'Give me permission, and do not subject me to trials.' Lo, in the trial they have fallen. And indeed, hell will surely encompass the disbelievers.
If good befalls you, it is evil to them, and if a calamity befalls you they say, 'Certainly, we took our affair before,' And they turn away while they are rejoicing.
Say, 'Not except what God has written for us will befall us; He is our master, and on God then let the believers rely.'
Say, 'Do you expect for us except one of the best two, while we, we expect for you that God will hit you with a punishment from Him or by our hands? So wait, indeed, we are waiting with you.'
Say, 'Spend willingly or unwillingly, it will not be accepted from you. Indeed, you are disobedient people.'
And not except that they disbelieved in God and in His messenger prevented them that their expenditure be accepted from them; and they do not come to the prayer except while they are lazy, and they do not spend except while they are averse.
So let not their wealth nor their children please you, God only desires to punish them with it in the worldly life, and that their souls may pass away while they are disbelievers.
And they swear by God, indeed, they are surely among you, while they are not among you, but they are people who are terrified.
If they had found a refuge or caves or a place to enter, surely, they would have turned to it, while they bolt.
And among them is one who defames you concerning the charities; so if they are given from it, they are pleased; and if they are not given from it, then they are displeased.
And if that they were pleased with what God and His messenger gave them, and they said, 'God is sufficient for us, soon God will give us from His grace, and His messenger, indeed, we are asking God.'
The charities are only for the needy, and the poor, and those who work on them, and those whose hearts are being united, and in the necks, and those in debt, and in the way of God, and the wayfarer; an ordinance from God, and God is knowing, wise.
And among them are those who annoy the prophet, and they say, 'He is an ear.' Say, 'An ear of good for you,’ He believes in God and he believes the believers; and is mercy for those who believed among you. And those who annoy the messenger of God, for them is painful punishment.
They swear by God to you to please you. And God and His messenger are more worthy that they should please Him, if they are believers.
Did they not know that he who opposes God and His messenger, then that for him is the fire of hell, to dwell forever in it? That is the great disgrace.
The hypocrites are cautious lest a chapter is sent down to them informing them of what is in their hearts; say, 'Mock, indeed, God will bring forth what you are cautious of.'
And surely if you ask them, surely, they will definitely say, 'We were only plunging into vain discourse and playing.' Say, 'Were you mocking God and His signs and His messenger?'
Do not excuse yourselves, certainly, you have disbelieved after your faith. If We pardon a party of you, We will punish a party, because they are sinners.
The hypocrites, men and women, some of them are from some. They bid the bad and they forbid from the good, and they contract their hands. They have forgotten God, so He has forgotten them. Indeed, the hypocrites, they are the disobedient.
God has promised the hypocrites, men and women, and the disbelievers the fire of hell, to dwell forever in it. It is sufficient for them. And God has cursed them, and for them is lasting punishment.
Like those who were before you, they were stronger than you in strength and more in wealth and children; so they enjoyed their share, so you have enjoyed your share, like those who were before you enjoyed their share, and you have plunged into vain discourse like the one who plunged into vain discourse. Those, their works are void in the world and the hereafter, and those, they are the losers.
Did the information of those who were before them not come to them? The people of Noah and 'Ad and Thamud and the people of Abraham and the fellows of Midian and the overturned cities. Their messengers came to them with the clear proofs. So God would not wrong them, but they used to wrong their souls.
And the believers, men and women, some of them are patrons of some. They bid the good and they forbid from the bad, and they are steadfast in the prayer, and they give the alms, and they obey God and His messenger. Those, soon God will have mercy on them. Indeed, God is mighty, wise.
God has promised the believers, men and women, gardens beneath which the rivers flow, to dwell forever in it, and good dwellings in the gardens of Eden, and the pleasure of God is greater. That, it is the great success.
O prophet! Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be harsh with them; and their refuge is hell, and evil is the destination.
They swear by God they said not, and surely, certainly they said the word of disbelief, and they disbelieved after their submission, and they planned what they did not attain. And they resented not except that God and His messenger enriched them from His grace. So if they repent, it is better for them, and if they turn away, God will punish them, a painful punishment in the world and the hereafter. And there is no patron nor helper for them in the earth.
And among them is one who covenanted with God, 'Surely, if He gives us from His grace, surely, we will definitely give charity, and surely, we will definitely be among the righteous.'
Then when He gave them from His grace, they were stingy with it and they turned away and they turn away.
Then He punished them with hypocrisy in their hearts until the day they meet Him, because they failed God in what they promised Him, and because they used to lie.
Did they not know that God knows their secret and their secret discourse, and that God is the knower of the unseen?
Those who defame those who volunteer concerning the charities among the believers and those who find not except their exertion, then they ridicule them, God has ridiculed them and for them is painful punishment.
Seek forgiveness for them or do not seek forgiveness for them, if you seek forgiveness for them seventy times, so God will not forgive them. That is because they, they disbelieved in God and His messenger, and God does not guide the disobedient people.
Those who were left behind rejoiced in their sitting-places being contradictory to the messenger of God, and they were averse to striving with their wealth and their souls in the way of God, and they said, 'Do not go forth into battle in the heat.' Say, 'The fire of hell is more intense heat,' If only they used to understand.
So let them laugh a little, and let them weep much, a recompense for what they used to earn.
So if God returns you to a party of them, then they ask for your permission to the coming forth, then say, 'You will not come forth with me ever, and you will not fight an enemy with me. Indeed you, you were pleased with the sitting the first time, so sit with those who stay behind.'
And do not pray for anyone of them who has died ever, and do not stand on his grave. Indeed they, they disbelieved in God and His messenger and they died while they were disobedient.
And let not their wealth and their children please you, God only desires to punish them with it in the world, and that their souls may pass away while they are disbelievers.
And when a chapter is sent down that, 'Believe in God and strive with His messenger,' The possessors of power among them ask for your permission and they say, 'Leave us to be with those who sit.'
They are pleased to be with those who stay behind and a seal has been set upon their hearts, so they do not understand.
But the messenger and those who believed with him strove with their wealth and their souls; and those, for them are the good things; and those, they are the prosperous.
God has prepared for them gardens beneath which the rivers flow, to dwell forever in it; that is the great success.
And those who had no excuse among the desert Arabs came that permission may be given to them, and those who lied to God and His messenger sat. Soon a painful punishment will befall those who disbelieved among them.
On the weak nor on the sick nor on those who do not find what to spend there is no straitness, when they are sincere to God and His messenger. There is no way against the good-doers. And God is forgiving, compassionate.
Nor on those who when they came to you that you may provide them with mounts, you said, 'I cannot find what to mount you on,' They turned away while their eyes were overflowing from the tears, grief that they could not find what to spend.
The way is only against those who ask for your permission while they are rich. They are pleased to be with those who stay behind, and God has set a seal upon their hearts, so they do not know.
They will excuse themselves to you when you return to them. Say, 'Do not excuse yourselves, we will not believe you, certainly, God has informed us of your news. And soon God will see your work, and His messenger, then you will be sent back to the knower of the unseen and the seen, then He will inform you of what you used to do.'
Soon they will swear by God to you when you return to them, that you may turn away from them, so turn away from them, indeed, they are unclean, and their refuge is hell, a recompense for what they used to earn.
They swear to you that you may be pleased with them. So if you are pleased with them, then indeed, God is not pleased with the disobedient people.
The desert Arabs are more intense in disbelief and hypocrisy and are more worthy not to know the limits of what God sent down to His messenger; and God is knowing, wise.
And among the desert Arabs is one who takes what he spends as a debt, and he expects misfortunes for you. Upon them is the misfortune of evil; and God is hearing, knowing.
And among the desert Arabs is one who believes in God and the Last Day, and he takes what he spends as means of nearness with God and the prayers of the messenger. Lo, indeed, it is a means of nearness for them. Soon God will make them enter into His mercy; indeed, God is forgiving, compassionate.
And the foremost, the first among the emigrants, and the helpers, and those who followed them in goodness, God is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him; and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which the rivers flow, to dwell forever in it, forever; that is the great success.
And among those who are around you of the desert Arabs there are hypocrites, and among the people of Al Madinah, they are refractory in the hypocrisy. You do not know them, We, We know them. Soon We will punish them twice, then they will be sent back to great punishment.
And others who have confessed their sins. They mingled a righteous work and another evil. It may be God, that He will relent on them; indeed, God is forgiving, compassionate.
Take from their wealth charity to cleanse them and to purify them with it, and pray for them; indeed, your prayer is a means for rest for them; and God is hearing, knowing.
Did they not know that God, He, He accepts the repentance from His servants, and He takes the charities; and that God, He is the Relenting, the Compassionate.
And say, 'Work, so soon God will see your work, and His messenger, and the believers, and soon you will be sent back to the knower of the unseen and the seen, then He will inform you of what you used to do.'
And others postponed to the command of God; either He will punish them or He will relent on them; and God is knowing, wise.
And those who took a mosque in harm and in disbelief and in making a distinction between the believers and in ambush for whoever has waged war against God and His messenger before. And surely, definitely they will swear, 'We desired not except the best.' And God bears witness indeed, they are surely liars.
Do not stand in it ever. Surely, a mosque founded upon piety from the first day is more worthy that you stand in it. In it are men who love to cleanse themselves; and God loves those who cleanse themselves.
So is one who founded his building upon piety from God and pleasure better or one who founded his building upon the edge of a collapsing cliff, then it collapsed with him in the fire of hell? And God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Their building which they built will not cease to be doubt in their hearts except that their hearts are cut up; and God is knowing, wise.
Indeed, God has bought from the believers their souls and their wealth because for them is the garden. They fight in the way of God, then they kill and they are killed. A promise upon Him in truth, in the Torah and the Gospel and the Quran; and who fulfils his covenant better than God? So rejoice in your trade which you have traded with Him. And that, it is the great success.
Those who repent, those who worship, those who praise, those who journey for the purpose of devoting to religious services, those who bow, those who prostrate, those who bid the good, and those who forbid from the bad, and those who are guardians to the limits of God; and give the believers glad tidings.
It is not for the prophet and those who believed to seek forgiveness for the idolaters, even if they are relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are the fellows of the hellfire.
And Abraham seeking forgiveness for his father was not except that a promise, he had promised it to him, then when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to God, he cleared himself of him; indeed, Abraham was surely compassionate, clement.
And God would not cause people to go astray after He has guided them until He makes clear to them what they should fear. Indeed, God knows everything.
Indeed, God, for Him is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth; He gives life and He causes death; and there is no patron nor helper for you besides God.
Surely, certainly God has relented on the prophet and the emigrants and the helpers, those who followed him in the hour of difficulty, after the hearts of a party of them were about to deviate, then He relented on them; indeed, He is pitying, compassionate with them.
And on the three, those who were left behind, until when the earth was straitened for them, inasmuch as it is vast, and their souls were straitened for them, and they thought that there is no refuge from God except to Him, then He relented on them that they may repent; indeed, God, He is the Relenting, the Compassionate.
O those who believed! Fear God and be with the truthful.
It is not for the people of Al Madinah, and those who are around them of the desert Arabs to stay behind the messenger of God nor to prefer their souls to his soul. That is because they, thirst does not befall them nor fatigue nor hunger in the way of God, nor do they step a footstep that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they attain from an enemy an attainment, except a righteous work has been written for them with it. Indeed, God does not waste the reward of the good-doers.
Nor do they spend an expenditure, small nor great, nor do they cross a valley, except it has been written for them, that God may recompense them for the best of what they used to do.
And it is not for the believers to go forth into battle wholly; so if a party from every division among them does not go forth into battle, that they may study the religion, and that they may warn their people when they return to them, perhaps they may beware.
O those who believed! Fight those who are close to you among the disbelievers, and let them find harshness in you; and know that God is with those who fear.
And when a chapter is sent down, then among them is one who says, 'Which of you has this increased him in faith?' So as for those who believed, then it has increased them in faith, and they, they rejoice.
And as for those in whose hearts is sickness, then it has increased them in uncleanness to their uncleanness, and they died while they are disbelievers.
And do they not see that they are subjected to trials once or twice in every year? Then they do not repent and they, they do not remember.
And when a chapter is sent down, some of them look at some, 'Does anyone see you?' Then they turn away. God has turned away their hearts because they are people who do not understand.
Surely, certainly a messenger from yourselves has come to you. Mighty on him is what distressed you, eager for you, with the believers, pitying, compassionate.
So if they turn away, then say, 'God is sufficient for me, there is no god but He, on Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the great throne.'
