Surah “The Winnowing Winds, The Scatterers”

as rendered by A. S. Mohamed — 60 verses

By the scatterers that scatter,
and those carrying a load,
and those speeding along with ease,
and those distributing the command:
what you are promised is certainly true,
and the reckoning will surely take place.
By the heaven that has pathways,
you are uttering conflicting sayings.
Deluded away from it is he who is deluded.
Woe to the conjecturers
who are heedless, in a state of confusion.
They ask, "When is the Day of the Religion?"
On the Day when they are tormented over the Fire,
"Taste your torment. This is what you sought to hasten!"
Indeed, the reverent will be in gardens and springs,
receiving what their Lord has granted them, for before that, they were indeed good-doers.
They used to sleep but little of the night,
and before dawn, they would ask forgiveness,
and in their money, there is a decreed right for the beggar and the deprived.
There are signs in the earth for those with certainty,
and also in yourselves. Can you not see?
In the heaven lies your provision and that which you are promised.
By the Lord of the heaven and the earth, it is certainly the truth, as true as the fact that you speak.
Has the story of Abraham's honoured guests reached you?
When they entered upon him, they said: "Peace." He said, "Peace, O unknown people."
Then he went to his family and came with a fat calf.
He placed it close to them, saying, "Will you not eat?"
He then harboured a fear of them. They said, "Do not fear," and gave him the good news of a knowledgeable boy.
His wife approached with a shriek. She struck her face and said, "A barren old woman?"
They said, "Thus said your Lord. Indeed, He is the Wise, the Knowledgeable."
He said, "So what is your mission, O messengers?"
They said, "We have been sent to a criminal people,
to send down upon them stones of clay,
marked from your Lord for the excessive ones."
We thus evacuated whoever was in it of the believers,
and We did not find in it except one house of Submitters,
and We left in it a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.
Likewise, in the case of Moses when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority,
but he turned away to his corner of aids and said, "A magician, or a madman."
So We seized him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy.
Likewise, in the case of Aad when We sent upon them the barren wind.
It leaves nothing that it passes over without turning it to dust.
Likewise, in the case of Thamoud when they were told, "Enjoy yourselves until a certain time",
then they were defiant against the command of their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them as they looked on.
So they were unable to rise, and they were not victorious.
And the people of Noah previously; they were a wicked people.
And the universe, We constructed it with might, and We are expanding it.
And the earth, We furnished it. How admirable a Preparer We are!
And of all things, We created a pair; may you take heed.
So flee to God. I am a clear warner from Him to you.
And do not set up another god with God. I am a clear warner from Him to you.
Similarly, no messenger came to those before them without them saying, "A magician, or a madman."
Have they bequeathed this to one another? Rather, they are a transgressing people.
So turn away from them, for you are not to be blamed.
And remind, for the reminder benefits the believers.
I have not created the jinn and the humans except to worship Me.
I require no provisions from them, nor do I require them to feed Me.
Indeed, it is God who is the Provider, the Possessor of Power, the Robust.
Those who have transgressed will suffer a share just like the share of their companions, so they should not hasten Me.
So woe to those who disbelieved from their Day that they are promised.
